Suddenly he fell to his knees, with series co-stars Rhea Seehorn and Patrick Fabian rushing to his aid. As production paused and the crew began setting up a new shot, Odenkirk returned to the exercise bike he often used while watching Chicago Cubs baseball games between scenes. He was partway through filming the final season of Saul when it happened. As if that wasn’t enough, he’s also cheated death. Then a successful rebrand as a dramatic actor led to his unforgettable conman-turned-lawyer Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and its prequel series Better Call Saul, and his surprise turn as an unassuming neighbourhood hardman in 2021 punch-a-thon Nobody. His cult Nineties sketch series Mr Show arguably kickstarted modern alternative comedy, an area Odenkirk has subtly shaped in the years since by giving creative breaks to the likes of Tenacious D and Tim and Eric. For starters, he’s managed to cultivate a career path that spans multiple genres. It really shoved that thing far away’ (Invision/AP)īob Odenkirk is a lucky guy. ‘I don’t know if it’s a defence mechanism, but my brain really compartmentalised the experience.

The language of flowers vanessa6/9/2023 A dark blotch on her white sheet of professional accomplishments: For Victoria has been a foundling baby, abandoned at an age that usually makes finding families willing to adopt an easy task. Even social worker Meredith sees her only as a failure she personally doesn't deserve. There is nothing victorious about Victoria apart from the fact that she survived to see her eighteen's birthday. I will try to explain how this unceremonious drop around the middle of the story came to pass after introducing Victoria to you. The elegantly worded The Language of Flowers made me invest quite a lot during the first chapters, but gambled all my affection away later on.

Ghosh the hungry tide6/9/2023 Paul Verghese rightly remarks that “Food is the primary requisite of human dignity hunger debases and dehumanises man. Narayan in The Guide (1958), Bhattacharya in So Many Hungers (1947) and He who Rides a Tiger ( 1956) and Kamala Markandaya in Nectar in a Sieve (1954) and A Handful of Rice (1966) have raised their powerful voice against the problem of hunger and starvation. Anand in Untouchable (1933) and Coolie (1936), R. Narayan, Bhabani Bhattacharya and Kamala Markandaya had expressed their concern for the poor, the hungry and the destitutes in their novels. In Indian English literature, in the field of fiction, novelists such as Mulk Raj Anand, R.K. Indian writers in English are also no exception in this regard. As the act of eating takes such an essential place in the day-to-day life of the humans as well as in the universal struggle for survival, the motif of hunger becomes a powerful force that drives the action and plot of many works of art. Literary depictions of hunger had been a powerful motif in the writings of many writers across the world.

In showing these works together, I can show a clear example of how Japanese woodblock prints were a huge inspiration to modern European artists in the nineteenth century-the impact of that relationship might be less if the images were split across different areas of the museum. One of my favorite examples of this is the ukiyo-e print room in the Modern Art Gallery, which sits next to a painting by James McNeill Whistler. It also creates amazing opportunities to see works side-by-side that are from different geographical areas. By the final wing, there are no geographical galleries, and art from around the world sits alongside each other.īy displaying works this way, I hope that readers will be able to see how cultures and artists from all around the world have interacted with each other as the world became more connected over time. Then in the second wing, we look at broader areas, such as the galleries for European Painting or the Arts of Asia, which includes works from South Asia, Southeast Asia, China, Korea, and Japan. In the first wing, the galleries are divided into smaller regions, like Ancient Egypt, East Asia, or the Ancient Romans. Within those wings are many different “galleries” encompassing art from around the world during that period. There are three “wings” in the book that group ancient, early modern, and modern/contemporary art.

Stephan pastis bill watterson6/8/2023 … It was just a silly idea, and I didn’t know Stephan, so I never pursued it, and years went by.” Stephen Pastis, the creator of “Pearls Before Swine”, by some miracle pulled Watterson out of a retirement which not only included the bittersweet end of “Calvin” but also didn’t include any sort of public appearance.Īccording to The Washington Post‘s Michael Cavina, Watterson had considered working with Pastis’ “Pearls” a few years ago: “I thought it might be funny for me to ghost ‘Pearls’ sometime, just to flip it all on its head. So hearing that Watterson made a comeback of sorts last week shocked me. All of them walked away after saying what needed to be said, and as a result, comic strips have never held the same significance for me. Generally speaking, when it comes to comic strips, there are three heroes for me: Gary Larson, Berke Breathed and Bill Watterson.Īll of them produced hilarious masterpieces in a finite amount of time - Larson with “The Far Side”, Breathed with “Bloom County” (sorry, his stuff on “Outland” didn’t quite work for me) and Watterson with perhaps my all-time favorite, “Calvin and Hobbes”.
